Commonwealth v. Vance, 15 Serg. & Rawle 36 (Pa. 1826)

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (plaintiff) against Franklin County jailer John Vance (defendant) at the instance of Pompey Cribs (prisoner) regarding the legality of the registration of Cribs as a slave to Lazarus Brown. Cribs, son of enslaved woman Grace, was born into slavery, enslaved by James Maxwell and later transferred to Brown. Decision: enslaved person remanded.
