Respublica v. Smith, 4 Yeates 204 (Pa. 1805)
Respublica against Lambert Smith (defendant), keeper of the jail of Philadelphia, regarding Joseph, an enslaved man. Joseph was a fugitive slave enslaved to David H. Conyngham. Previously, Joseph was enslaved to Peter Boudineau and his wife in St. Domingo. They resided for some time in Philadelphia before Boudineau left for France, leaving Joseph to serve his wife; Mrs. Boudineau assigned Joseph to Conyngham, in consideration of his manumission. Decision: enslaved person discharged.
