State v. Pitney, 1 N.J.L. 165 (1793)

New Jersey against Pitney (defendant) regarding Prince, a Black man who claimed his freedom. Prince’s mother was enslaved to Jasper Smith (deceased), who manumitted all of his slaves through his will. Smith’s widow and John Bills, administrators of Smith’s estate, sold Prince to Pitney, but Prince claimed his freedom based on the will of Smith. Decision: enslaved person released.
