Wood v. Stephen, 1 Serg. & Rawle 175 (Pa. 1814)

Henry Wood (plaintiff) against Stephen (defendant) regarding Stephen’s claim to freedom from the enslavement of Wood. Stephen was previously enslaved to Richard Williams (deceased) and claimed his freedom under the will of Williams. Stephen’s grandmother, Sarah Pound, submitted a petition for freedom against her enslaver Samuel Chase, also claiming her freedom under the will of Williams; her petition was dismissed. Stephen’s mother, Jane Brown, was succesfully manumitted under the will of Williams. Decision: judgement affirmed.
